[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-02-20 I am surprised this has received little (no?) attention on DK. It is being reported that Soros is purchasing a big block of Audacy’s bankruptcy debt. The reorganization plan is being reworked to give debt holders equity rights, which could put Soros in a strong position with company management. This would mean some influence, if not control, over the second-largest group of radio stations, more than 200 nationwide. This is being compared with iHeartMedia, which is the largest group of radio outlets. IHeartMedia was rebranded more than a decade ago from what was called ClearChannel. ClearChannel was notoriously right-wing. I had been contemplating doing a small diary about IHeartMedia before this Soros move came up. I have recently increased my information consumption via podcasts and greatly reduced my time on cable news channels such as MSNBC. I find there is much greater access to a vastly wider swath of news through podcasts. Of course, the legitimacy/integrity of any particular podcast can be in doubt. But frankly, I find MSNBC worse than worthless these days. I have been careful to select podcasts that seem to be rational and well-grounded in reality. Which brings me to IHeartMedia. In addition to owning radio stations, IHeartMedia hosts and funds many podcasts, most of a pop culture nature. I expected to find a strong rightward slant. But the first three I started following were actually very progressive-minded. They are not political programs, per se, but they do examine much of what is happening in the world and have a rather clear-eyed view. These podcasts are: Stuff They Don't Want You To Know Stuff You Should Know TechStuff I would encourage everyone to explore some of these. It has restored my hope that there actually is intelligent life out there once one breaks away from the two cable channels that do nothing but feature Trump 24x7 (namely MSNBC and Fox) I encourage any comments or thoughts about these recent moves by Soros, which includes gaining control of 14 Spanish-speaking stations. I also encourage any observations or recommendations of podcasts that represent an intelligent view of the world without referring to Trump every 5 seconds.
