Kitchen Table Kibitzing 2/20/2024: Mash Notes [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-02-20 Gustaf Fjaestad: Winter Evening by a River (1907) Good evening, Kibitzers! Yesterday I was seeing some loose talk about a 5% risk of tornadoes in the general area of Sacramento, along with the heavy downpours that California seems to be getting now as a regular thing. I hope you will all check in in the comments and reassure me that no one has yet been washed away, carried off to Oz, or flattened by a large boulder the size of a small boulder. In poking around YouTube for something entertaining this week, I noticed once again the work of a man named Bill McClintock, proprietor of a channel called McClintock Mashups. He is not the only YouTuber making mashups of two or more different songs, but his are meticulously done and rather impressive. We first saw a sample of Mr. McClintock’s work this past December in my holiday songs diary. Dirty Deeds Around the Christmas Tree is an amalgam of AC/DC’s Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and Brenda Lee’s Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree. Obviously, I’m not going to leave that rich vein of weirdness unmined, so today we will see some of his other work. McClintock sat for a 40-minute interview back in 2020, and I’m putting that here at the top so it doesn’t get buried. However, I’d recommend you listen to it later, if you’re so inclined, not only so you don’t miss talking to us in the comments, but also because you don’t even really know what you want to find out about how he does this until you’ve heard some tracks. I will share that McClintock is a trained musician who does not really like getting up on a stage and having everyone look at him, which is a feeling I can certainly understand. He teaches music now, but he’s been enjoying being able to use his considerable knowledge and share his talents while still hiding in his house, through the miracle of social media. [39:44] So, let’s hear some of his work! Typically, each song features two main performers, but there are often cameo appearances in the middle, sometimes a guitar break from an entirely different song, sometimes just some video or short phrases that fit with the rest of the new “song”. McClintock also furnishes a title for each mashup, such as this first one, my personal favorite title. I’ve listed all the artists and songs included for each video, and linked to the original songs (not necessarily the specific video being used, but they were generally not hard to find). Money For Shopping by Dire Straits and Smokey Robinson & The Miracles [3:34] (Another awesome title!) Plenty High or 6 to 4 by Chicago and Black Sabbath [3:44] At some point, he started adding mashup performer names to the titles: Rock Emotion by “Aerotha Franklin” [4:18] Take the Soul Power Back by “James Against the Machine" [4:51] Ten Seconds to Run by “Mötley Reeves & the Crüellas" [3:51] Stop and Bust a Move by “Buffalo MC" [3:51] When Black Friday Comes (You Know I'll Seek and Destroy) by “Dantallica" [3:25] You Make September Fun by “Fleetwood Fire" [3:22] Break on Through (to the Funky Side) by The Doors and The Temptations [3:15] With a Rebel Yell, She Cried, “Don't Give Up the Fight” by Bob Marley and Billy Idol. (It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I think this one is especially well done.) [4:11] My World is Empty Without You, Maneater by Hall and Oates and The Supremes [4:09] Raining Lobsters by “SLAY-52s” [3:20] And the big finale, with some more prominent guest appearances than we’re used to: Ice Cold Ground by Foreigner and Stevie Wonder [3:01] A few extras today: First, many thanks to Denise Oliver Velez for sharing this great ad for Democrats, from Eleven Films, an Oregon production company that dropped their regular work in 2020 and again in 2024 to get behind Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and a Democratic House and Senate. [2:08] We haven’t had many parody songs in a while. Hopefully our favorites are about to get busy again. Here’s a Rocky Mountain Mike piece from a couple of weeks ago, a Carpenters/Sesame Street tune sung by “Mary In Ann Arbor and the It's A Trapp Kids”, exhorting Judge Engoron to do… what he did!
