Referendum [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-02-10 I’m kind of glad the Hur business happened, because it clarifies something that’s been hovering over this election year: this isn’t about two people. Joe Biden’s old and probably forgets stuff. Donald Trump’s a hot mess of DSM symptoms and probably smells bad. It doesn’t matter. Personal characteristics aren’t the point, and wouldn’t even be the point if the race were, say, Harris/Hayley. This election isn’t a contest of personalities. It is a referendum on a simple question: Do you support the government of the United States as defined in the Constitution and its amendments? One party has pledged to maintain and strengthen our current, cumbersome, often frustrating form of government. One party has embraced a very different vision of government based not on law or tradition, but the desires of an all-powerful Leader. It doesn’t matter if Republican “party elders” have “concerns” about their candidate. In building a power base by exploiting Americans’ latent xenophobia, racism, sexism, homophobia, etc., those “elders” have painted themselves into a corner. The only nominee the base will accept, for any office, will be Someone Who’s Gonna Hurt The People We Hate. Whether or not that person bears the name Trump is immaterial. This has made this year’s decision plainer than any in memory, a choice more basic than personalities or policies, just a simple question: So, how are you with that whole “America” thing? You good with that?
