Border Security "Crisis" Is a Smokescreen to Hide Reproductive Freedom as a Key Issue [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-02-10 The main arrow in the GOP’s quiver is “WhatAboutism”. On any issue you might mention to a right-winger, their reply always seems to start with “Well, what about ...” The quintessential example was “What about Hillary’s e-mails?” from 2016. I’ve learned to deflect WhatAboutism, false equivalences, and similar right-wing tactics, and to keep the discussion on-topic. The “crisis” of border security is nothing but a right-wing attempt to deflect attention away from reproductive freedom, or lack thereof, as a key motivator. The GOP wants everyone to talk ONLY about border security, and ignore the fact that women are now second-class citizens in many states. Unlike men, they don’t even have sovereignty over their own bodies. In such states, ANY pregnant woman is vulnerable to complications that could become life-threatening. Ob/gyns are fleeing these anti-choice states, and doctors who remain behind can’t help women until their complications become life-threatening. Patients are told to bleed out in the parking lot until nearly dead, and only then come back in for life-saving treatment. Doctors don’t want to risk their medical license or even risk prison by treating in the medically appropriate timeframe. So the GOP wants to use border security as a shiny object to take everyone’s attention away from such travesties. They don’t want us to remember that Trump appointed one-third of today’s Supreme Court, enough to kill Roe v Wade which had been the law of the land for nearly half of century. Don’t fall for WhatAboutism. Stick to the subject of reproductive rights for all elections in general, and to the existential threat to democracy for the Presidential election in particular. Border security may be a crisis, but only because the GOP refuses to solve it lest Trump lose his main WhatAboutism arrow. If it REALLY were a crisis, then the GOP would pass the Senate’s bipartisan compromise RIGHT NOW.
