I need to get back to a project that needs to be up for next week, so tonight is open thread night but I am not going to leave you empty handed. First off, crazy as the Taylor Swift conspiracies are nowadays, they’re nothing new. As far as music conspiracies go, I don’t even find them impressive. Jesse Walker/The Atlantic Conspiracy theories about the music industry come in many flavors. A century ago, to give one of the uglier examples, Henry Ford’s Dearborn Independent claimed that a “Jewish combine” was suppressing gentile music and promoting jazz. “Popular music is a Jewish monopoly,” the paper declared in 1921. “Jazz is a Jewish creation. The mush, the slush, the sly suggestion, the abandoned sensuousness of sliding notes, are of Jewish origin.[...] The psychedelic ’60s gave us such pamphlets as David A. Noebel’s Communism, Hypnotism, and the Beatles (which claimed that the Kremlin was using the Fab Four to induce “artificial neurosis” in the American child) and Gary Allen’s That Music: There’s More to It Than Meets the Ear (which speculated that the Beatles’ music was “put together by behavioral scientists in some ‘think tank’”). Then came the backmasking panic that peaked in the ’80s, when a horde of ministers, teachers, broadcasters, and legislators became convinced that conspirators were inserting backwards satanic messages into rock records, where they would subliminally lead young listeners to Lucifer. I remember Black radio stations being obsessed with playing Prince’s D.M.S.R. backwards trying to decipher a Satanic message, for one. Possibly the greatest kick returner of all time makes the NFL Hall of Fame. I hate that the Bears lost that one Super Bowl with Devin Hester and it definitely wasn’t his fault. If you don’t already, maybe you should wash that rice after cooking it after all! ...many foods can be contaminated with arsenic and its compounds, although some cases are more concerning than others. For instance, fish commonly contain organic forms of arsenic like arsenobetaine, which are less worrisome compared to inorganic forms that are highly toxic. That’s why the latest EFSA report focuses on evaluating the latter. Rice, grains and derivative food products are the primary sources of human exposure to arsenic. It’s also worth noting that arsenic can be found in drinking water. [...] Water, rice, grains and derivative food products contribute the most to dietary exposure to arsenic. However, this doesn’t mean we should avoid consuming them or take extreme measures at home. The EFSA report focuses on assessing the risk of arsenic consumption and doesn’t recommend any extreme measures. Spain’s Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) supports this view as follows: Grains are a vital source of complex carbohydrates that, when combined with other foods, have a positive impact on health. To ensure a healthy diet, it is recommended to consume three to six daily servings of grains (such as wheat, corn, rice, oats, etc.), preferably whole grains, depending on energy requirements. Water is the preferred beverage for a healthy diet, and the arsenic levels in water are generally minimal. Avoid eating hijiki seaweed because it contains high levels of inorganic arsenic. Last but not least, of course, no Friday night Top Comments Open Thread is complete without...the stars! x We've got our "eye" on the nebula NGC 6751! 👁️ Though this #HubbleClassic might look like a cosmic eye in the sky, NGC 6751 is actually a cloud of gas ejected several thousand years ago from the hot star visible in its center: https://t.co/s3G6qBKWxV pic.twitter.com/Ispe6sD3Hn — Hubble (@NASAHubble) February 6, 2024 Comments below the fold. TOP COMMENTS Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. From kamachanda: This comment by dryeyes in notksanymore's recommended diary Sticking with Joe, the best President since FDR is just what we need after a Trump lackey's dirty trick attack on President Biden in a report clearing the President of wrongdoing in retaining some classified documents from his time as VP. From inkstainedwretch: Bring the Lions makes merely the best of many, many great comments on Gaelsdottir's recommended diary on what’s motivating the attacks on Biden.
