Immigration is the new abortion [1]

As Republicans seem to be well on their way to killing the extremely conservative “compromise” border bill that some of their most conservative Senators spent weeks crafting, all the while delaying critically needed, life and perhaps country-saving aid to our democratic and ferociously courageous ally Ukraine, it is of course abundantly clear that their treasonous, seditious-loving, rule of law-hating, book banning -craving, anti-democratic party has zero interest in actually solving / addressing the issue they allegedly care the most about, immigration. No interest whatsoever

While this has undoubtedly been true for quite some time — even well before House Republicans killed the bipartisan immigration bill which remarkably passed the Senate by a 68-32 vote in 2013 --it has never been made more brazen or explicit than right now. They are trashing of a bill that is far more conservative than anything they could remotely hope to pass in other circumstances given narrow partisan majorities in both chambers for the foreseeable future. All for perceived political gain. (and because of their pathetic, groveling to their twice-impeached, 91 felony count indicted, staggeringly corrupt, profoundly ignorant, pathologically lying, bigoted national loser of a “leader.”)

So immigration is now the new abortion for the GOP. Republicans never really wanted to have to do anything about abortion nationally, After all, Roe v. Wade was “never going to be overturned,” therefore they could cater to the single-issue voters in their base who cared about this issue in campaign after campaign, keeping the issue alive year after year, while knowing they would never need to answer to all those folks out there nationally who didn’t agree with them on this because it would never rise to that level. Until it did.

And now we see the same thing with immigration — this is a party which will want to keep this issue alive, year after year, election after election, for god knows how long because they have demonstrated over and over again that this is a party that doesn’t give a shit about policy, or compassion, or human empathy… and really only cares about attaining, and maintaining, power by any means necessary. Regardless of how many thousands or tens of thousands or hundred of thousands or millions of lives are negatively impacted or lost.

The good news is that Republicans have now been finding out what happens when their dog finally catches their car on abortion — and they have been paying a brutal price politically. Perhaps something similar will occur when a majority of the American people realizes that this radically extreme, putrid collection of cowards actually doesn’t want to solve this issue and indeed, actively undermined the most conservative effort to address the issue in years. Perhaps there will be a backlash. I suspect, unfortunately, that backlash won’t happen right away, though.

In any event, a fundamental problem is that these are grotesquely unserious people. Historically so.

And in a world in which we’re facing a frightening number of large, excruciatingly difficult / bordering on intractable problems, both foreign and domestic, — problems which need to be addressed and which only can be addressed by people who actually care about solving problems — that is devastating.

It all boils down to a question I have asked myself, and Increasingly others, many times over the years -- why the f-ck (pardon my French) would anyone vote to entrust the reins of government to a party which doesn’t actually give a shit about, ya know, actually governing?
