White to move and mate in two #464 - Dr. Strangelove [1]

Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, was released 60 years ago on January 29, 1964.

It is perhaps the best political satire film of all time. It is one of the movies I can watch over and over again without losing my sense of awe and surprise.

Dr. Strangelove is very much relevant even today. Instead of fluoridation and communists, we have CTs in MAGA-world about COVID vaccines and immigrants "poisoning our blood". We still have military generals and lawmakers who love wars and bombs, the loyal soldiers who do not reason why, and the hubris and lust of men in power.

But Kubrick’s portrait of a US government mired in fascism, incompetence and cowboy fantasies of violence still has a queasy relevance. The Soviet Union is no more, but Jack Ripper with all his precious bodily fluids and his terror of invasion by outside, feminizing forces is still a recognizable stand in for the border-obsessed, homophobic America of former President Donald Trump and his MAGA movement.

The brilliantly directed movie is chock-full superb writing and sparkling performances — Peter Sellers in a triple role, Sterling Hayden as Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper, Slim Pickens as Major T. J. "King" Kong, the B-52 bomber's commander and pilot and George C. Scott as General Buck Turgidson.
