It's Not Enough to Save Democracy from Trump [1]

Don't get me wrong Donald Trump needs to be stopped. None of our partisan differences, ideological conflicts, or activist agendas will matter if our democracy is destroyed. Imagine Trump weaponizing the FBI and IRS to go after his critics. If Republicans get control of the Senate and keep the House they could use hearings to menace everybody they consider the enemy. Even worse would be Trump using soldiers under the Insurrection Act to crash strret protests. It's a nightmare scenario.

Some might say stop right here - keeping Trump out of the White House is all that matters. I disagree.

Our economy isn't benefitting ordinary working people. It's great for rich people and big business, That's got to change. We"re at full employment and inflation is going down. But we've got structural problems that have been undermining the middle class for years.

Millions of Americans struggle to make ends meet. Some don't have retirement savings, and most others couldn't make it on either Social Security or a 401K alone. People are piling up trillions in credit card debt to handle emergencies and unexpected household eexpenses. At the same time job loss or catastrophic illness mean financial ruin for thousands every year.

Corporate profits are higher than ever and higher stock values make billionaires richer and richer. Yet workers labor away often without raises or bonuses. The two tier wage system thrives on temporary labor, lower pay, no benefits, and instability. You're here for a year or less then you're gone. Is it any wonder why the UAW strikes were unrelenting and took a hard line on pay and jobs. And finally labor is making a real effort among workers at Amazon and Starbucks.

While a lot anger over inflation and opposition to immigrants and refugees is misplaced or motivated by xenophobia, people are struggling just to keep what the have. They know somethings wrong.

You can have a well functioning democracy and a messed up society. If Donald Trump had never came along ot if him and MAGA magically disappear tomorrow most of us would still work in an unjust economy. Liberals and Progressives must fight on two fronts. We must save democracy and ensure an economy built on shared prosperity for working people.
