Execution by nitrogen hypoxia - Still a relic of barbarism [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-01-25 This evening, Alabama became the first state to execute a prisoner by administering nitrogen. . What do proponents of this method have to say about it? That it is painless. What do I think? . 1- No it’s not necessarily painless. The nitrogen is administered through a mask, what Alabama says is “One size fits all”. That is the first red flag, as doctors in Europe who have administered nitrogen and stated that, if oxygen is allowed to leak into a mask or bag that is over somebody’s face, the death can result in torture, and can be quite painful. . 2- Now to death penalty issues, the first being in how it is applied. The death sentence is arbitrarily applied, and that people of color can be sentenced to death much more than whites for the same crime is a fact. . 3- Who remembers the Sacco and Vanzetti case, in which 2 men who were executed were later exonerated of their crime? Yes, they were exonerated, but they will never get their lives back. There are plenty of Sacco and Vanzettis on death row. Some have been cleared after DNA evidence showed that they never did what they were convicted of. They don’t get their lives back because much of their lives were spent on death row. As for the innocents who ended up being executed? They were murdered, plain and simple. . 4- As for death penalty itself? It is nothing more than state sanctioned murder. And I have no problem with calling the death penalty a relic of barbarism, because that is exactly what it is. . As for Alabama? Fuck them.
