[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-01-24 This is close to home for me, only a few miles from where I live. Three Tacoma police officers were acquitted in the death of Manny Ellis, a Black man who lived in Tacoma, WA. Their “penalties” for the three police officers after the verdict was resign/be fired with a $500k payout for each of them. I am submitting the news sites links and from Wikipedia that says it all. Sorry for links and lack of my own writing in this but I wanted to say, I AM MAD AS HELL AND WONDERING IF YOU ARE TOO!” Killing of Manuel Ellis - Wikipedia “Manuel Ellis was a 33-year-old African American man who was killed by police during an arrest on March 3, 2020, in Tacoma, Washington.[2] The Pierce County Sheriff's Department initially claimed that Ellis had attacked a police car and officers, leading to the arrest.[3] State prosecutors quoted civilian witnesses as saying that Ellis did not attack the police car or officers; they also said it was the officers who attacked Ellis after a conversation.[4][5] Video of the incident showed officers repeatedly punching Ellis, choking him, using a Taser, and kneeling on him.[6][7] State prosecutors stated that "Ellis was not fighting back", citing witness statements and video evidence.[8] A police radio recording showed that Ellis said he "can’t breathe".[9] Ellis told officers "can't breathe, sir" multiple times, according to prosecutors.[10] Ellis was hogtied, face-down, with an officer on him, for at least six minutes, and a spit hood was placed on his head in this position, stated prosecutors.[10] Ellis died at the scene while receiving medical aid from paramedics.[3] In early June 2020, Ellis's death was ruled by county medical examiner Thomas Clark as a homicide due to "hypoxia due to physical restraint", and with "contributing conditions of methamphetamine intoxication and a dilated heart".[2][11] Prosecutors, in May 2021 documents, quoted Clark as saying that additional evidence that emerged after the autopsy concluded indicated that "Ellis's death was not likely caused by methamphetamine intoxication", and further indicated that restraint caused the death.[12][13] After Ellis's death, four Tacoma police officers were placed on paid administrative leave; they returned to work two weeks later, with the Tacoma police department stating "there were no known departmental violations".[6][14] The Pierce County Sheriff's Department conducted a three-month investigation into Ellis's death before disclosing that a Pierce County deputy was present during Ellis's arrest.[15] As a result, in mid-June 2020, Governor of Washington Jay Inslee ordered a new investigation by the Washington State Patrol, while the Washington Attorney General would decide potential criminal charges.[16] In May 2021, Washington prosecutors charged two Tacoma police officers, Christopher Burbank and Matthew Collins, with second degree murder for the killing of Ellis, and charged another Tacoma police officer, Timothy Rankine, with first degree manslaughter.[1] In December 2023, all three defendants were acquitted after being tried for charges ranging from first-degree manslaughter to second-degree murder.[17]” 3 officers acquitted in death of Manny Ellis, who pleaded for breath, to get $500,00 each and leave Tacoma Police Dept. - CBS News “Three Washington state police officers who were cleared of criminal charges in the 2020 death of Manuel Ellis — a Black man who was shocked, beaten and restrained facedown on a sidewalk as he pleaded for breath — will each receive $500,000 to leave the Tacoma Police Department, according to documents released Tuesday.” See below for the report from Seattle Times.: By Patrick Malone Seattle Times staff reporter “TACOMA — Three Tacoma police officers who were acquitted last month of killing Manuel Ellis reached settlements totaling $1.5 million to walk away from their jobs after an internal investigation largely cleared them of wrongdoing. Officers Matthew Collins, Christopher Shane Burbank and Timothy Rankine had been on paid leave since June 2020. They’ve already collected about $1.5 million in pay, received multiple raises and accrued hundreds of hours of vacation time since they last worked, city payroll records show. Collins, Burbank and Rankine will each receive $500,000 settlements to leave their employment with the city of Tacoma, according to settlement documents dated Jan. 11 that were released publicly on Tuesday. According to a city spokesperson, in addition to the settlement, they will be paid out for vacation time as well as 10 percent of their sick time. They’ll also keep their pensions.” Many people here were hoping that after they were acquitted, they would at least get penalized and lose their jobs. Little did we know, they each got a half a million dollars plus all their leave and their full pensions for leaving the Tacoma Police Department (City next to Seattle), and beating a Black man to death. This is far more of a “penalty” pay out than most of us will ever see in our lifetimes. I am a federal worker myself for 23 years and can only dream of getting those “penalties” for doing my job, let alone what will happen to me if Trump gets back in the WH. The Project 2025 authors have already identified 30,000 workers who can be dismissed and replaced by pro-Trump-Bannon go-getters who will submit total loyalty/fealty to Trump. And here we are, police officers awarded a huge payout for killing a Black man. This is a blue state!! What has gone wrong here in these decisions, and the justice system? Disclosure: Sorry for the repetitive information, I just wanted to post this while it is still relevant and I AM SO MAD about this!
