Fixing the way that America selects its President [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-01-24 The history of the presidential nomination process evolved over time, with changes in party rules, state laws, and responses to political pressures. In our current system, various states, in an arbitary order, hold primaries or caucuses where party members vote for their preferred candidate. Delegates are then awarded to candidates based on the results in each state. Delegates are committed to voting for a specific candidate at the respective national conventions based on the results. They are then nominated by thier party to the general election. My humble proposal is for four nonpartisan blanket primaries , with ranked-choice voting, in which all candidates, regardless of their party affiliation or any other restrictions, compete on a single primary ballot. This primary system is different from traditional primaries where candidates from each political party compete separately. The Primary. The first voting held in March without qualifications. Delaware Pennsylvania New Jersey Georgia Connecticut Massachusetts Maryland South Carolina New Hampshire Virginia New York North Carolina Rhode Island The Secondary. The second voting would be in April. To qualify on the ballot, a candidiate must have finished in the top 10 of the March Primary. Vermont Kentucky Tennessee Ohio Louisiana Indiana Mississippi Illinois Alabama Maine Missouri Arkansas Michigan The Tertiary, in May. To qualify, one must have placed in the top 5 of the April Secondary. Florida Texas Iowa Wisconsin California Minnesota Oregon Kansas West Virginia Nevada Nebraska Colorado North Dakota South Dakota The Quaternary, in June. To qualify, one must have placed in the top 3 of the May Tertiary. Montana Washington Idaho Wyoming Utah Oklahoma New Mexico Arizona Alaska Hawaii Puerto Rico Guam U.S. Virgin Islands Washington, DC The very last two remaining candidates will then face off in the general election in November.
