Detroit Free Press: Jim Harbaugh and Chargers 'now in striking distance' of getting deal done to become coach by Andrew Birkle Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh is reportedly "within striking distance" of reaching a deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo said Tuesday, "We're now in the zone where something could happen between the Chargers and Jim Harbaugh in the near future," as the two sides are set to meet for a second time. Garafolo also added the Chargers have made an extremely strong financial offer to Harbaugh and are at the point where they are discussing staffing issues like who the general manager might be and who would join Harbaugh on the coaching staff. This is not the first report of Harbaugh potentially having interest in an NFL gig while at U-M. After the 2021 season in which Harbaugh got the Wolverines to the College Football Playoff for the first time, the former Michigan quarterback flew to Minnesota to meet with the Vikings, but couldn't come to an agreement. Then after the 2022 season and a second straight loss in the CFP, Harbaugh reportedly interviewed virtually with the Denver Broncos and also drew interest from other teams, but ultimately decided to run it back in Ann Arbor. Chicago Sun-Times: Identities released of 5 of 8 people killed Sunday in Joliet ‘reign of terror’ by Emmanuel Camarillo and Mohammad Samra Joliet mass murder suspect Romeo Nance is believed to have killed all eight of his victims — two of them teenage girls — on Sunday, the day before police discovered seven of them at a grisly crime scene, and Nance wound up killing himself while on the run. Those were among the few details that police shed on the rampage in the Joliet area that left two girls, three women and three men dead, and another man wounded — before the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Texas. Police did not discuss a possible motive for the massacre. “We can’t get inside his head. We just don’t have any clue as to why he did what he did.” Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans said during a news briefing Tuesday. “This incident has had a tremendous impact on the city of Joliet,” Evans said. “It’s had a tremendous impact on my agency, both mentally and physically.” Investigators said they believe Nance, 23, fatally shot seven individuals — at least a “majority” of them relatives of his — in two homes in the 2200 block of West Acres Road before committing two “random” shootings in the area and fleeing Will County, Evans said. The New York Times: Trump Defeats Haley, Fueling His Drive Toward G.O.P. Nomination by Shane Goldmacher and Reid J. Epstein Donald J. Trump defeated Nikki Haley in the New Hampshire primary election on Tuesday, continuing his momentum toward the Republican nomination and raising fresh questions about her viability going forward. Mr. Trump’s victory, called by The Associated Press just as final polls closed at 8 p.m. Eastern, means that he has, in consecutive weeks, outpaced Ron DeSantis in Iowa and Ms. Haley in New Hampshire, the two states where they had campaigned and spent most aggressively. No Republican candidate has ever won the first two states and then not ultimately secured the presidential nomination. Ms. Haley conceded her loss and congratulated Mr. Trump — “he earned it,” she said — but vowed to press ahead with her campaign to South Carolina, her home state, which holds its primary election on Feb. 24. “New Hampshire is first in the nation,” she told supporters in Concord, N.H. “It is not the last in the nation. This race is far from over. There are dozens of states left to go. And the next one is my sweet state of South Carolina.” Washington Post: Mother of Oxford school shooter faces trial in historic prosecution by Kim Bellware [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/1/23/2219159/-Overnight-News-Digest-January-23-2024?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=latest_community&pm_medium=web Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
