Kitchen Table Kibitzing 1/23/2024: For John [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-01-23 Vittorio Zecchin: Salomé (1913) Good evening, Kibitzers! It was seriously cold here, and lots of other places, last week! As I write, though, I’m looking at trading that in tonight for a fairly inconsequential amount of snow, then warmer (like, 40s, even 50s) temperatures and rain for the rest of the workweek. Back in the pre-internet days, the local NOAA radio station broadcast the weather on a loop. I’m sure they still do, in fact. Originally, some meteorologist would read it into a tape recorder, but once there was synthetic speech, the NWS got a robot weather reader, I imagine from the lowest bidder, that turned every diphthong 50-50. If you don’t know what I mean by that, I will say that my favorite forecast that it rendered was, “Too-nah-eet: Snoh-oo.” Anyway, while I was noodling about on YouTube recently, I learned about a longstanding annual event in November that honors the legacy of John Lennon, including a concert featuring covers of his songs by artists old and (relatively) new. Yes, I am a sucker for that sort of thing, but I liked a lot of the performances, and hope you will too. Producer Joe Raiola explains Theatre Within's Annual John Lennon Tribute. Here is the event’s YouTube channel, with many more songs than I can include. (FTR, Joe Raiola is also a retired senior editor of MAD magazine.) [2:13] A number of these clips are from the 30th annual concert, at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on November 12, 2010. The other years mostly don’t have backing band credits listed on YouTube, but for the 30th, they are: Jack Petruzzelli: guitar, Pete Kennedy: guitar, Tony Shanahan: bass, Kevin Bents: keyboards, Rich Pagano: drums/Musical Director. (Rich Pagano is the long-term musical director.) 30th (2010) Jackson Browne: You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away. This was the first of these that caught my attention and made me think, hmm, what else is on a channel called “LennonTrib”? [2:53] 30th (2010) Keb' Mo': In My Life. [3:46] 32nd (2012) Shelby Lynne and Joan Osborne: Julia. [4:00] 30th (2010) Bettye LaVette: The Word. [3:38] * I had serious trouble deciding between this song and her version of Wait from the 2013 event. Thus, I link the other one! 29th (2009) David Bromberg: You Can't Do That. [4:33] 30th (2010) Patti Smith and Tony Shanahan: Oh Yoko. Patti Smith speaks touchingly about the loss of her husband and her choice to sing this song. [5:18] 30th (2010) Taj Mahal: Come Together. [4:33] 31st (2011) Toshi Reagon: Jealous Guy. I felt like this artist’s name sounded familiar, and it turned out to be because her mom is Bernice Johnson Reagon, a founding member of both SNCC’s Freedom Singers and Sweet Honey in the Rock. (To take nothing away from Toshi Reagon, who is a distinguished musician in her own right! I’m just old, and some of you are, too, so this is Context for Old Folks.) [4:52] 40th (2020) Jorma Kaukonen: Yer Blues. Like so much else in 2020, the event that year was a virtual one. [4:30] 33rd (2013) Dana Fuchs: Across the Universe. [5:17] 41st (2021) Bobby Harden: We Can Work It Out. [4:29] 27th (2007) The Kennedys: A Day in the Life. [4:25] And to close: 29th (2009) Joan Osborne and Bettye LaVette: Imagine. [3:46] ❄️ Further to last week’s blizzard diary: I see that Sunday’s Astronomy Picture of the Day, brought to us by NASA and friends, is a photo from the “Upper Michigan Blizzard of 1938”, which started 86 years ago this week. If you think there is no picture there, just keep scrolling.
