This is an open thread where we can share our thoughts and comments about the day. The Carillon Historical Park in Dayton, Ohio is a 65-acre complex filled with dozens of museum buildings which showcase the region’s industrial innovations, transportation achievements, and contributions to world progress. One of the displays looks at Dayton’s soap industry. According to the display: “Soap manufacturing was a significant industry in Dayton, with the city’s earliest known soap factory established in 1828. By 1920, three soap manufacturers dominated the Dayton soap industry and were selling their products nationally: The Hewitt Bros. Soap Company, the Davies-Young Soap Company and the Beaver Soap Company.” The Hewitt Bros. Soap Company was founded in 1884 and became the nation’s second largest manufacturer of private label bath soaps, specialty soaps, and hotel soaps. In 1933, the company became a subsidiary of Proctor & Gamble. The Davies-Young Soap Company was founded in 1844 and was nationally known for its commercial and industrial cleaning products. The Beaver Soap Company was founded in 1878 and its primary product was Grandpa’s Wonder pine tar soap. According to the display: “Soap contains two ingredients: a triglyceride (animal or vegetable fats and oil) and a water-based caustic solution of either sodium hydroxide (lye) or potassium hydroxide (potash).” Soap can be made using either a hot process or a cold process. In the hot process, the final product is ready to use in 1-4 days while in the cold process it takes 4-6 weeks. Soaps made with 100% olive oil—Castille Soap—take 6-8 months to cure and be ready to sell. Open Thread This is an open thread—all topics are welcome.
