[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-01-11 We are moving on through the month, how's it going? DaKoWriMo goals & progress Aashirs nani — Rewrite a series of scenes in a novella to be more historically plausible, with a pair of new characters. Dconrad: 20,000 words Mercy Ormont: get "Cholly" ready to publish on Amazon mettle fatigue: any least bit of fiction RiveroftheWest: illos for the riverboat story ThurzdaysChild: weekly writing sessions, one to four hours each. When our characters get out of hand, there has to be a reason. It might not be obvious, though. In caring for developmentally delayed adults, we were taught about setting events and triggers for "maladaptive behaviors". A setting event is something that happened earlier and may have nothing whatever to do with the later behavior. It creates a certain emotional tone, maybe a fretfulness, anxiety, anger, or depression. Then a more immediate trigger that may seem trivial can lead to an outburst all out of proportion. Or an event that a character could not laugh about at the time might lead to really manic laughter at a later, minor joke. Do your characters have issues? Almost certainly. But have you dropped any clues to their causes? Maybe the mystery is the point, but you should have an idea so it can be solved at some point. This might be a bit lengthy or complex for a practice assignment, though you can try it. So here's an alternative, a thoroughly off-the-wall writing prompt derived from a dream I had (and can remember nothing else but this!): "The groundhogs are playing chess, I don't think an earthquake is imminent." Make it make sense, I double dare ya!
