Reelecting President Biden to preserve the Affordable Care Act [1]

I was diagnosed with a hernia in November. I went to see a surgeon for evaluation. He told me it was a small hernia that only involved fat tissue (no organs) sticking through the abdominal wall. He said I might be able to go 10 or more years without surgery. He said I could have it done now if I wanted to. We sort of left it that I would wait for worsening or symptoms but that I should call him if I changed my mind.

I left the office and got on the elevator. I was alone on the elevator and thought about maybe needing the surgery in the coming years. That caused me to think about the chance of a Republican getting into the White House next year. Based on the little snippets I’ve seen of the Republican primary, all the candidates say they want to repeal the Affordable Care Act. So if a Republican takes office, the surgery would cost me $5,000 to $20,000 out of pocket according to google.

I decided to have the surgery now while it’s covered by insurance. I called the surgeon’s secretary the next day to schedule the surgery for next month. I’m having an elective surgery because of the threat Republicans pose to my ability to see a doctor.

People worry about the price of eggs. I’m more concerned about losing my medical insurance. $20,000 for surgery is a much bigger financial hit than spending an extra dollar for a dozen eggs caused by inflation.

The Affordable Care Act also reduces mass shootings. Some people blame guns and others blame mental illness. It’s both but mostly guns. The mass shooting in Maine was carried out by a person who was suffering from schizophrenia. Many psychiatrists accept insurance through the Affordable Care Act. So people who need psychiatric help can get to a doctor and be prescribed antipsychotic medication. The medication is also covered by insurance through the Affordable Care Act.

I made a donation to President Biden’s reelection campaign. He and Vice President Harris have done a good job.
