Personal pleas for help on Daily Kos [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-12-12 I need some Kossak collective wisdom to aid my understanding of a phenomenon that pops up on Daily Kos from time to time, and seems to be occurring more frequently. (And I re-read the Terms and Conditions and Rules of the Road before writing this.) Just before Thanksgiving there was one of those "help-me-you're-my-only-hope" pleas posted by someone who said he was in pretty dire financial straits, along with aggravating circumstances of unemployment and chronic health problems. According to the post he and his family were given an absolute deadline of the Friday after Thanksgiving to pay past due rent or lose the roof over their heads. I donated via the individual's PayPal account. There was a lot of back and forth in the comments about whether he could do better by using some of the other internet money apps. I am not looking for thanks. But I was and still am curious about whether my contribution helped. Usually there is some acknowledgment. For the past four weeks, there has been nothing. No updates. I'm okay with that. I don't feel entitled to know whether my donation did any good. But it would make me feel better about responding to other diaries pleading for personal financial help to know what has happened in this case. I realize juggling financial bobcats might not leave this individual a lot of time to get back to us. So to be clear, it's okay with me if I hear nothing more. When I try to access the original diary and the comments thread off my Profile history, I get "Access Forbidden Error 403. You do not have permission to view this page." Then there's a suggestion that I might not be logged in. Not sure what that means. If the powers that be at Daily Kos think I don't need to know what it means, okay. I've been here for 14 years and am not one of the most prolific writers on the site, to put it mildly. I’ve been to a couple of meet-ups and am personally acquainted with some of the Kossaks around me. I get the idea of empathy among members of this “family” of common interests. I deeply value the information here, the wisdom here, and the Democratic Party's candidates vetted and endorsed here. They all deserve to be supported financially. I am not rich. But I do what I can. I'm here for the "news you can do something about." I want to help elect more and better Democrats at the federal, state, and local levels with volunteer time and with my (limited) money. But these personal supplications strike me as a distraction from the primary purpose of this site. I'm less swayed by them now. How do other Kossacks feel about it?
