Ceasefire in Gaza Over -- Hamas Fires First Shot [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-12-01 Friday morning brought an end to the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, and the return of fighting, as Hamas fired the first shot. Each side is now blaming the other for breaking the ceasefire. Israel and the US says Hamas ended the ceasefire by failing to submit a list of hostages to release on Friday by 7 am, which was required to extend the ceasefire. Hamas says Israel broke the ceasefire, but didn’t state how. Hamas may have broken the ceasefire Thursday night when they carried out a 2 man suicide attack at a bus stop on the outskirts of Jerusalem. They killed 3 Israelis, injured 5, and were killed by police. The police also mistook an Israeli shooting at the terrorists as a terrorist, and killed this Israeli. Regardless of who said what, Hamas fired the first shot before 7 am by sending a rocket into Israel. Breaking a ceasefire is usually attributed to who fired the first shot. Firing a rocket into Israel is an offensive action without a defensive explanation, Thus, Hamas should be charged with breaking the ceasefire, especially as they lack any rationale for blaming Israel. (While we might provide such a rationale, it is up to Hamas to do so.) Hamas has continued to fire a sizable number of rockets into Israel on Friday, reaching as far as Jerusalem. Most likely, they were busy building rockets during the ceasefire, and may have felt they had enough to end the ceasefire. Israel has resumed their bombing of Gaza. No action on the ground has been reported. To this author, the most glaring failure of Hamas to honor the ceasefire agreement is their refusal to allow the International Red Cross (ICRC) to visit the hostages as stipulated in the agreement. (For reasons unknown, the media has somehow failed to highlight this failure.) It should be noted that negotiations are continuing with Qatar, the US, Egypt, Israel and Hamas. Perhaps they will be able to reach an agreement to resume the ceasefire. But, maybe not.
