Kitchen Table Kibitzing 11/7/2023: Long Form [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-11-07 Odilon Redon: Road to Peyrelebade (1912) Good evening, Kibitzers! In my Sunday Inoculation Project diaries, I usually get weather updates from areas where we have no regular KTKers, and often from nomandates as well. I’m hearing that everyone’s weather is pretty nice these days, and mine is too. I hope the same is true of you all in the more westerly regions. (Except for Durango; I hope they’re having a big blizzard.) If nothing else, better voter turnout is often good for us. And that’s the story of this evening: it’s election night [first DK liveblog here], and everyone’s more interested in election returns than in my usual large and aggressively random video collection. So today we have a small and slightly less random collection of four longer-form videos, each approaching and in one case surpassing an hour in length. If you can’t focus on them now, perhaps you’ll need something to watch at a later time. Or maybe you’re worrying now and need to be distracted for a while. Or maybe you are, ironically, such a devoted patron of Short Attention Span Theater that you never watch more than five minutes of anything anyway. Don’t care. Doesn’t matter. If you find something you like, mazel tov. Here’s where I started: the “Pod Save America” interview with Barack Obama that marge mentioned a few days ago, which dropped last night. I haven’t even watched the whole thing yet, but I am pretty confident it’s worth watching. [1:27:00] In the fifties, young Mike Wallace had a TV interview show called Night Beat. In 1957, he interviewed Thurgood Marshall, then working for the NAACP, most recently on Brown v. Board of Ed. The interview might make you yell at the screen sometimes, given that you probably don’t think the NAACP was “moving too fast” on integration and ought to give the poor sad white people time to get used to the idea. (Faulkner, wtf?) The video runs [47:15], but the actual interview is just under 30 minutes long, following the news and weather and some ads. If you have any interest, after the numerous following commercials, the film breaks to a much later time, and shortly to the present, where the man who has collected this, along with bales of other ancient and disintegrating footage, talks about what he’s doing. (In the notes, he says this: “When I located this 16mm Kinescope negative of Thurgood Marshall on Night Beat with Mike Wallace broadcasted in 1954 [actually 1957] by the Dumont Network , it had been rescued from a garbage bin outside of Metro Media in the 1970's and sold to me in the 1980's along with other Dumont television film prints this collector scooped up. This is the only existing print.”) Justice Sonia Sotomayor is interviewed at the Library of Congress in 2019, as part of their Supreme Court Fellows Program.
