Kitchen Table Kibitzing 7/4/2023: Can You Surry?* [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-07-04 Winslow Homer: Moonlight (1874) Good evening, Kibitzers! Happy Independence Day! I hope everyone has had a good holiday. And although tomorrow may feel like Monday, there’s another weekend coming up in three days! I know it’s only 2023, but I can’t think of a more patriotic thing to put up here than links to three folks who write tirelessly to help this community be active. All of these users post frequent diaries; these are links to the most recent. When you see them, please rec them so they hit the rec list and reach more people. 🗽 Brainwrap does an astounding amount of work to put together ActBlue pages that allow you to easily split your donations among numerous groups of Democratic candidates, federal and state. 🗽 Yosef 52 assembles information on how to work toward Democratic victories. He’s just getting started for this cycle, and his diaries will get longer and more info-stuffed as time goes on. 🗽 Rob in Vermont has created a series of bumper stickers getting the Democratic message across, and he will send you some for free if you wish. See his frequent diaries for details, and also for how to donate toward funding this distribution. Now then! Time to move on to tonight’s topic, which is: picnic/cookout food! I know it’s a bit late for 4th of July, but as mentioned previously, another summer weekend is coming right up, and there are more after that! What a deal! Before starting the videos, let me recommend the weekly Friday afternoon Wonkette cocktail column, Wonkette Happy Hour, and this particular installment exploring the making of decent sangria several ways. I think it is important information for the summertime host to have available. I kind of wish they did make a video, actually. Okay, on to the food! Lidia Bastianich: Chilled, yogurt-enriched tomato soup makes a nice hot-weather first course or light meal. [9:27] Food Wishes, with Chef John Mitzewich: Farmer’s frittata with summer vegetables plus goat cheese. [10:39] Brian Lagerstrom: Grilled shish kebabs that avoid the common pitfalls of skewered foods (or, as he puts it, “don’t suck”). [10:58] Preppy Kitchen, with John Kanell: Shrimp tacos with mango salsa. (And if you feel like a ridiculous dessert-y cocktail, don’t miss his Mudslide recipe.) [12:20] Glen and Friends, with Glen Powell: Yes, he’s Canadian, but his Memphis BBQ sauce recipe is an heirloom from family in Memphis. [9:42] Spain on a Fork, with Albert Bevia: Tuna and avocado salad has a quick, no-cook preparation, perfect for a hot day. [6:16] Lidia Bastianich: A couple of people are in here twice because I couldn’t cut them down to just one dish. This warm green-bean salad with mint pesto looks fabulous. [4:52] Sip and Feast, with Jim Delmage: Besides his Italian cooking expertise, working in a deli taught Jim a few things about how they get macaroni salad and potato salad to taste the way those deli salads do, around here anyway. [12:39] Brian Lagerstrom: Now you’re covered for the rest of the classic cookout sides: coleslaw, baked beans, and a very interesting-looking Mexican street-corn salad, for all the flavor without the messy on-the-cob eating. [13:56] Not Another Cooking Show, with Stephen Cusato: In order to make lemon Italian ice like that served on the east coast, one must first make lemonade, so this is a dessert AND beverage video. [5:02] Glen and Friends: In contrast to the Italian ice, this rum-raisin ice cream requires no ice-cream maker. As long as you have some kind of mixer or are willing to beat the ingredients by hand, you’re golden. (His channel has a number of these “no churn” ice cream recipes, so if you’d prefer a different flavor, go to the link and look around for your favorite.) [7:07] Food Wishes: We’ll let Chef John have the last recipe — red, white, and blue “cheesecake bites” leverage the season’s red and blue berries. [10:12] The Parody Project, with Don Caron (as his own quartet): This additional verse to the national anthem is more poignant than funny, but/and it seems appropriate today. [1:30] The 5th Dimension: Laura Nyro’s Stoned Soul Picnic, live on the 1968 TV special Francis Albert Sinatra Does His Thing. [3:07] * ”Can you surry?”: Huh. I always assumed it was “surrey” as in, “ride in a surrey” (with or without fringe on top).
