I have to admit that I like our chances. But, I am a realist. Experience has opened my eyes to the possibilities, and I wonder if our party is really ready to tackle the opposition and secure the wins 2024 has the potential to bring. With all the infighting, fractures, and disarray of the Republican Party coupled with the persistence of the MAGA base there is no way for the Republicans to legitimately win in 2024. Thankfully, if Trump is not in prison, and he wins the nomination he still cannot win the election fairly. Because as much as the Republican Party has gone off the deep end and will support the chaos that Trump would bring, the people of this country that have been loyal members of the Republican electorate are not “all-in” on Trump. Many of them have come to a point where they are disillusioned and have had enough of the orange buffoon. So many are disillusioned, that even if it were a bad turnout year for Democrats they would not have enough votes to get him elected. Add to that the Gen Z factor and the furry over abortion restrictions and they are screwed. The bad thing that we have all come to understand is that Trump’s in-elect-ability is not a problem for Republicans. Because they will do whatever they need to do to get into power. It is really getting to the point that elections are only a part of the process to claiming power. We have seen it again and again, Republicans fighting dirty, demanding recounts if they think it will help them, sending staffers to Florida to instigate riots and stop recounts when they think it would hurt them, flat out denying the results of the elections, using the Supreme Court to put their guy in the white house, and every other tactic possible to overturn results they where they did not win. Now that the Supreme Court majority has been corrupted the danger is ever more prescient. In 2020 we saw Republicans run several ghost or sham candidates in districts where they could not win without a third party to break up the democratic vote and divide the results so that the republican could win, and it worked. There were at least two Republicans elected in that election that would not have been if the third independent candidate was not on the ballot. Now in the past, spoiler candidates have run and caused problems, but they were genuine candidates that wanted to win. Ghost candidates have no intention of winning, just dividing the democratic vote so that the democratic candidate gets less by some number that might give the republican an edge to be able to pull out a win. I think that the Republicans are going to do anything and everything they can to get back into power. That means trying to use dark money to support a primary challenger for Biden. Supporting a third party ghost candidate to steal votes from Biden. Of course, they are also going to continue with efforts to restrict voting, limit early voting, cast doubt on mail in ballots, intimidate voters in highly democratic areas, and all the other things they have in their play book. We need to expect all of it, and make a plan to deal with each and every possibility because our democracy depends on it. We are literally on the verge of fascism becoming a reality in this country. We need to counter every loud mouth with a loud mouth of our own. For every MTG we need a Pete Buttigieg, for every Loren Bobert we need an Elizabeth Warren, for every Matt Gaetz we need an Adam Schiff. We need all of these, and we need them to be louder. We need them to be on TV, on every show, in every newspaper, and we need them to be there every day. Republicans have been operating on the premise that any exposure is good exposure, and it has worked for them because even when they say stupid shit –which is all the time, it is lessened by the factor of the exposure time. For MAGA Republicans any exposure IS good exposure, and like Trump it’s all about the ratings and being a star. For Democrats that exposure has to be rational, well spoke, thought out, effective and well received. We need more and more public speakers in the party that have excellent debating skills to step up their presence and fight the information wars that are ongoing. Democrats are disadvantaged by the fact that our electorate is intelligent. A Democratic candidate has to be well educated, free from scandals and well spoken. These are not qualities necessary for Republicans. When you look at the fastest rising stars in the Democratic Party, like Barak Obama, Pete Buttigieg, Beto O’Rourke and you compare their qualities they all fit the bill, well spoken, intelligent, and for the most part, free from scandal. We need to put forward those in our party that fit the bill and utilize their charisma to highlight the differences in our two parties. I do not fear the upcoming election like I have in the past. With more and more convictions and indictments of those who have worked hard to destroy the fabric of our democracy our country is waking up to the mess that the Republicans have created. We just need to keep up the hard work, and we need to plan for the offensive that the Republican Party is preparing to steal power.
