Florida doctors can now let you die with a clear conscience. Because of Jesus or whatever. [1]

Florida wants us to die

I don’t write many of these. And this one won’t be long. But our republic is in critical condition. The things that hold us together, the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the idea that each person is worth something—these are all under assault. Simple fundamental principles of human worth are in tatters. And each day seems to bring another assault on the basic right of people to exist with a sense of place in a society in which they can exist without fear.

It got worse this week. On May 11, Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, signed into law, The Protections of Medical Conscience Act. Which among other things, allows all medical providers, doctors, nurses, techs, labs, EMT’s, pilots, drivers, and anyone else, the right to refuse care to persons based on their deeply held personal and/or religious convictions. It also allows insurers the right to refuse to pay for services based on these same personal criteria.

They are allowed to let you die if they don’t agree with how you live your life. Whether you’re LGBTQIA+, a Democrat, a fan of the wrong music, have a tattoo, and countless other random characteristics that may run afoul of someone’s religious or personal preferences. None of these things are protected anymore. This seems within a hair’s breadth of executing any who choose not to conform.

We’re nearing the point when the system cannot hold these things in tension any longer. There is a fracture coming.
