Rupert Murdoch from Australia is the Problem [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-03-08 Rupert Murdoch and Trump In 1969 Rupert Murdoch outbid Robert Maxwell, father of Ghislaine Maxwell for the ownership of the British Newspaper known as the Sun. “The Sun”. The Sun, originally published in 1964 was the rebirth of the daily newspaper in England, which hadn’t had a daily paper for 34 years. In the past, newspapers had been tied to Labour, or to the Conservatives. The Sun proclaimed to be different. “The Sun is politically free. It will not automatically support or censure any party or any Government. It is an independent paper designed to serve and inform all those whose lives are changing, improving, expanding in these hurrying years.” Two days after Murdoch’s purchase, the Sun it reappeared in tabloid form. The Sun began to publish color photos, focus on sensationalism, with celebrity stories and real-life issues intending to shock readers with its content. It would be a formula Murdoch repeat over and over. Instead of remaining politically neutral and covering news, The Sun became an influence in making the news. It openly supported Margaret Thatcher and the Conservative Party. When Thatcher retired, a new Prime Minister was elected, and the Sun continued to support the Conservative Party now being led by John Major received more votes than any politician in British history and The Sun claimed credit for it. In 1997 Rupert Murdoch had a change of heart about John Major, disagreeing with his European policies. Major wanted England to be successful in the European Union and Major did not fear a reunited Germany. In 1997 Rupert Murdoch demanded John Major, Prime Minister of England change his European policies or Murdoch would not support him (John Plunkett, 2012). The Prime Minister did not change his policies: He acted in what he believed was England’s best interest. In 1997 Labour enjoyed a massive landslide victory and Tony Blair replaced John Major as Prime Minister. Today Rupert Murdoch besides being married to Mick Jaggers ex Jerry Hall, owns 20th Century Fox including Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Post. Fox News is often accused of supporting conservative causes. Rupert Murdoch once likened himself to Maxwell Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook. The Baron was also a newspaper owner, though born in Canada, he was one of three individuals to have sat in the British cabinet during both world wars. In England, he worked to remove Prime Minister Asquith in favor of David Lloyd George. Later, his newspaper would support Neville Chamberlain and his peace deal made with Adolf Hitler with a headline announcing “Britain will not be involved in a European war this year or the next year either” (Brittanica Editoirs of Encyclopedia, 2021). The Baron did not bat 1000 when it came to supporting politicians who were strong enough for the times they governed in. In 2016 Rupert Murdoch backed Donald Trump, (Sherman, 2017). Trump, the man who said, “I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait,” “When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.” In particular, Trump’s favorite was Bill O’Reilly. O’Reilly though, would be forced out of Fox due to sexual harassment complaints, at which point Murdoch announced the company would set a hard limit of five sexual harassment complaints per on air talent (Macintyre, 2017). Sean Hannity then became Trump’s favorite, appearing on his show, and speaking often off air with the questionably educated show host on a frequent basis. Hannity bragged about being a Trump advisor (Rutenberg, 2016). By 2020 Murdoch had soured on Trump. About six months before the election Fox News began taking a softer approach on Joe Biden (Parsley, 2020). Murdoch predicted Biden would win by a landslide and added, “America was ready for sleepy Joe” (Amore, 2020) On election night Fox News was the first station to call Arizona for Biden. Angered by the call, Trump called Murdoch. Murdoch refused to budge and as time would prove the call was correct. And that correct call sent Fox into a tailspin. Worried they would lose their base their stars Maria Bartiromo, Sean Hannity, and Tucker Carlson followed any lie they heard to motivate Trump’s base into believing the election was stolen. The result was January 6th and now Fox faces a $1.6 Billion lawsuit from Dominion, maker of voting tabulation machinery. Rupert Murdoch has installed and removed leaders of countries in both the United Kingdom and the United States. I don’t believe the citizens of either country ever granted him that power. The question is: How do we prevent one man from having this type of power? The best way, send him back to Australia.
