Two weeks ago it looked like the Covid-19 pandemic might finally be winding down in the USA as it belatedly started following the trend now prevalent in most of the world (outside China at least). But this week the numbers out of Florida were absolutely gob smacking — yielding the largest 2-week surge in a cumulative death toll that any state has seen in nearly a year, more than twice that of runners-up California and New York, and large enough to see the national biweekly death toll actually expand rather than contract. Granted, a significant number of these new Florida deaths may be due to delayed record keeping from earlier weeks, but seriously, WTF is actually going on now in DeSantistan with respect to the pandemic? Bethesda 1971 has a noteworthy diary up about the many deficiencies of the NYT, including coverage of DeSantis and his “handling” of Covid in Florida — in which Paul Krugman estimates 20,000 more Floridians died since January 1, 2021 (when Covid vaccines first became widely available) than would have been the case if Florida had followed California or New York’s trajectory instead. Note that SC death data needed to be corrected after these tables were put together.
