It was brutal and disturbing and there has been plenty of rightful commentary and reaction to the act, this is about how I thought it could have been prevented. Okay, there’s plenty of legitimate criticism of law enforcement reaction and I’ve been guilty of Monday Morning quarterbacking since Columbine and of course more recently everyone was justified with Uvalde. So, while I hesitate, slightly from my overdose of police drama TV shows and perhaps unrealistic expectations am I really wrong to question what I (my personal opinion only) consider common sense if given (and that may be an assumption on my part) certain important information from the 911 operator and the dispatcher, not to mention my own eyes if I am an officer on the scene, and react accordingly? We are aware that the 911 operator was aware that someone, uninvited, is at the residence who is waiting at the Pelosi residence with the identified Paul Pelosi (I believe at approximately 2:30 am) for Pelosi’s wife to arrive. Red flag right there regardless of whether they knew who Paul Pelosi is. [I’m paraphrasing] The operator than hears Pelosi or the stranger say that he doesn’t like how the call is going and needs to end the call. Another red flag. Somehow, I assume, at least these two important factors get passed through police dispatch to the officers that arrive on scene, Taking into account all that they should have assumed that when the door opened and an 80-year old man is trying to hold/grab the handle of a hammer with a much younger, bigger, individual, that this is not two men arguing over who’s going to hang a picture on the wall at 3 am even though the older gentleman is smiling like a hostage, kidnap, or domestic abuse victim when forced to out of fear of escalation when police show up. Dumb me. I’m sure police officers see way crazier stuff than this everyday, right? But, let me go a step further. Assume, Dispatch did not pass any important info on, the officers get there, you are one of the officers, you/I see two men holding a….WEAPON…it’s a hammer for f’s sake. To me, it’s the same as a knife. My first reaction is to tackle the big guy and hope I can position my body between Mr. Pelosi and the guy with a frickin’ weapon that the smiling gentleman is trying to prevent the younger, bigger, guy from having unrestricted free range to swing it wherever and however he wants, My first reaction is not to shine a flashlight in their faces to get a better view and what, see if one is drunk or high while he’s allowed to hold a weapon? Maybe I’m wrong here. My wife thought the officers should have drawn their guns and asked them to drop the hammer/put their hands up. Maybe I’m the AHole. I don’t know or care. I just know what I would do even if I had not received the most important of information from Dispatch. Forget the politics. Forget would the officers, 911, or Dispatch have known this was Nancy Pelosi’s residence. This is an 80 year old man, any 80 year old man deserves sacrifice, human intervention, heroic effort and most importantly critical thinking. Late thought. Again Monday morning QB’ing. I’m 60 and if I was in Mr. Pelosi’s position but had his upper body strength, I may have reacted differently when the door was opened and let go of the hammer and ran out the door or behind one of the officers. 1) Mr. Pelosi may not have physically able to do that or the police were blocking the door. 2) Mr. Pelosi may have been acting heroically knowing that even if he was able to get out the door or behind an officer that it was likely that an officer could be hurt as there may not have been enough time to draw a weapon or defend their self.
