The latest (old) news is that air can be unhealthy when people cook with unventilated gas stoves. We have known for a long time that people with asthma and lung disease were vulnerable, but now we also know that ~12.5% of asthma cases come from gas stoves. That’s pretty amazing. Formaldehyde is still used in preserving clothes (which is why you want to wash them before wearing) and even a small amount was in Johnson & Johnson’s baby shampoo. Formaldehyde outgasses from press board furniture Here’s a side-effect most people don’t know about formaldehyde — it eats away at the thin-walled copper tubing in your HVAC system and causes the copper to fail. Higher SEER units have thinner tubing and shorter lifespans (and cost more!) Approximately 10% of copper tube premature failures are caused by volatiles like formaldehyde. And these are produced by gas stoves and smoking. (As well as the other sources mentioned above). That gas stove could not only be harming you, your kids, and your pets, but it could also cost you serious money to fix your A/C.
