At Casa Brillig it's more likely to be Legos.. in this case, the extremely well-done Elf Clubhouse! As I’ve mentioned, every December I do a series of seasonal diaries on a variety of topics. I kicked off the 2022 Seasonal Series with a look at the traditions we keep and those we change (or is that begin for the first time?). Then we considered Wish Lists. Last week was holiday dinner conversation starters. I’ve got one more for us this year. I know what you’re thinking. It’s either “But Christmas was yesterday”, “Hanukkah is over now”, “I’m Orthodox Christian so MY month is January”, or “I don’t have a holiday I celebrate this time of year”. And yet… if you live in the United States (and presumably many other countries), this week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is unlike every other week of the year. Just a few examples: - The kids, be they preschoolers or college-aged, are on break. Which means many parents are on vacation either by necessity or choice. - Lots of offices and other workplaces are either closed or on dramatically reduced/relaxed hours. - Lots of ‘once a year’ relative visits happen - The pace of life is often different enough that it’s easy to lose track of exactly what day it is. - We’re reflecting on the year gone by, and thinking about the year to come - The food. So much food. And snacks. And dessert. Out of curiosity I googled the phrase “that week between Christmas and New Years” and got a staggering number of hits. I’d never heard it called Twixmas (twixt Christmas and New Year) before, but the portmanteau makes perfect sense. For many Christians, this period is part of the Twelve Days of Christmas, that Dec 25-Jan 6 period between Jesus’ birth and Epiphany. There are lots of other descriptive titles for this week, but for almost everyone, it can be summed up as “this weird week where time has no meaning, we probably don’t need to wear hard pants, and we graze more than we eat regular meals” Here at Casa Brillig, Mr. Brillig always takes this week off… and not only because he’s ALWAYS got use-it-or-lose-it vacation time. It’s a time where we slow down, watch movies, play games, build Lego sets, and rejuvenate a bit after the rush of the past few months… or more realistically, the past year. This year we’re enjoying some bonus time with K1, who now lives a few miles away with a housemate but who’s living here while said housemate recovers from a double dose of covid and flu. K2 is communicating with college coaches and enjoying some much-needed downtime after a flurry of exams and coursework at his new school. And we’re having a blast as Simba enjoys his first Christmas with us. What are you doing this week? Is it different for you, or just like every week?
