A Thank-You to Liz Cheney [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2022-12-19 Just one thing. I want to thank Rep. Liz Cheney for her service on the 1/6 select committee and for her staunch defense of the Constitution. Of course, I can’t recommend her take on policy, but this is a great time to put aside politics and recognize actual patriotism and bravery. In the final business meeting of the committee, Cheney said: Among the most shameful of this committee’s findings is that President Trump sat in the dining room off the Oval Office, watching the violent riot at the Capitol on television. For hours he would not issue a public statement instructing his supporters to disperse and leave the Capitol. In addition to being unlawful, as described in our report, this was an utter moral failure, and a clear dereliction of duty. No man who would behave that way at that moment in time can ever serve in any position of authority in our nation again. He is unfit for any office. (From Yahoo! News, Liz Cheney Says Trump 'Unfit for Any Office' in Final Jan 6 Public Hearing, 19 December 2022) Cheney began her remarks during the hearing by noting the Capitol has a painting of George Washington resigning leadership of the Continental Army, turning power over to Congress, following the American Revolutionary War. She went on to speak about her great-great grandfather, who fought four years for the Union during the American Civil War as a member of a regiment from Ohio. Here we have the stark contrast between men of honor, putting our country before their personal benefit, and Donald J. Trump, unfaithful to the Constitution. I also want to thank Rep. Adam Kinzinger for his service on the 1/6 select committee and for standing up for the Constitution. Both Kinzinger and Cheney took principled stands despite risks to their physical safety and the severe impact on their careers. It gives me more faith in our country and our society that people will rise above their personal and partisan benefits to do what is best for the nation. It would be nice and extremely helpful to our country for this spirit of pursuing the public good to spread throughout politics.
