Red Fox shortly before seeing me.

I’m getting older than most top soil, and am sort of retired, except for still having a beef herd and still making wood carvings. Retired or not, I can’t seem to sleep anywhere close to dawn. And nope, it still isn’t close to dawn after breakfast, email, and a few diary reads here on Daily Kos. As is my usual habit, I set out to check my beef cattle this morning with too little light to distinguish one color from another. It’s about three tenths of a mile to where the cattle were just getting up for the day. Soon after arriving at a full count, I saw something moving beyond the cattle. I regularly carry along both a camera and binoculars on this particular mission. At first I could only tell that it was a canine through binoculars. I attempted a picture. My camera displayed a yellow rectangle and a question mark, which means, “I don’t know what the hell I’m supposed to be focused on.”

I then put the center focus square on an intervening cow, making the camera focus well enough to get something. The animal I was seeing was unaware of me and continued to proceed slowly, watching and listening for Prairie Voles.

I approached closer then stopped. It continued working its way slowly in my direction. By the time it saw me it wasn’t much over thirty feet away. It instantly bounded off, so light afoot, it made me think of a beach ball hit by a gust of wind.

I also told a thumb nail version of this story on the Kentucky birding list serv without including images. No non bird images allowed on eBird. So far I’ve had 3 requests for images. If I get any more, I’ll send them a link to this diary instead of sending images.
