ABC Interview of Mike Pence [1]

Mike Pence was interviewed by David Muir of ABC News in a hour program aired last night.

It was done in advance of his new book’s release today, possibly coinciding with his former boss’ announcement of a 2024 re-run for President.

There were mostly confirmations of the actions occuring during the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots including Trump’s inaction and disregard of Pence’s safety from the seditionist mob.

I was struck by the apparent hold Trump maintains over Pence and likely any other candidate considering a primary challenge. When asked various specific questions by Muir about whether the ex-President acted unlawfully or in violation of his oath, Pence deferred to a pat answer that other parties would be the final arbiters.

Pence repeatedly wove in faith-based responses to whether he would run. Other than personal anger at Trump for disrespecting him, I did not get the impression that he understood at the time how radical and unprecedented the Trump attempts to challenge and overturn the election would be to the country.

I came away with a lower opinion of Pence’s fitness to be President and while he did perform his constitutionally mandated duty to affirm the results of the election, he deserves little additional praise for the work he did as VP and in doing the actual right things which would be to publicly repudiate Trump, not selling books.
