Grab a cuppa and spend some time chatting with us! All are welcome to join the fun, the silliness, the conversations. If you don’t know...just ask! Some things really do require a bit of explanation. There will be a few surprises along the way, all good ones, we hope. We are here to keep building the Daily Kos Community. We post Mon-Sun at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. Pie fights will be met with outrageous ridicule and insults. Trolls will be incinerated and served at the next group BBQ. As briquettes. The title of the diary is from my childhood...as in, “Really swift there, kiddo.” Swift was often pronounced “swooft,” to get the full disdain for one’s idiocy across. As the youngest, I was also the swooftest! LOL This pic came about because I had a knack for replying to the wrong person, or (worse) replying to myself instead of the intended person. It got to be called “Pulling A Marti” and I am now famous notorious for it. We all make mistakes, so being able to laugh at them really helps. It’s going to happen. I am living proof! Now, where did I put those nummy noshes? Classic Carrot Cake simple croissant The ever-popular cheese Danish! Have a second cuppa! Other “real swift there, bozo” things? Those pesky mispronounced words. I have my own list, which DOES include a few of these. From the online-verse, the top-ten list is below, alongside the average monthly number of Google searches for those pronunciations, according to Unscrambled Words. Each term is also hyperlinked to a pronunciation at Merriam-Webster, unless where otherwise indicated. Acai – 20,400 monthly searches Gyro – 17,660 monthly searches Omicron – 15,530 monthly searches Charcuterie – 15,140 monthly searches Nguyen (pronunciation via Heritage-Line) – 14,990 monthly searches Gnocchi – 11,350 monthly searches GIF – 11,230 monthly searches Worcestershire – 8,880 monthly searches Dogecoin (pronunciation via Benzinga) – 7,540 monthly searches Pho – 7,270 monthly searches The folks at Merriam-Webster, meanwhile, would like to remind us that we’re fools to think there are only 10 words we commonly mispronounce. In both June and October of 2022, the editors of the tome have released their own lists of the most mispronounced words in the English language, which include such whoppers as "victuals," "awry," "epitome" and, yes, "acai." Gif was one I always got wrong, so I pronounced it like the name of that famous peanut butter. wrong!!! The first word of the acronym is “graphic,” so obviously g in GIF is a g as in garden. Once you know that...easy/peasy! Grab another cuppa, and share your favourite mispronounced words…..and don’t be surprised if you discover you’ve been saying one or two the wrong way for years! My Partial List: modicum any pre- word is often mispronounced as per- word. gahhhh obviously: The b is in there for a reason; it is not silent OH, my sainted aunt!! I almost forgot the music selection for today. Just last week, I was talking with my BFF about movies we both love. The Princess Bride came up. We both LOVE the movie and all the catch phases, so much so that it is inconceivable that we hadn’t talked about them before. And I told her about our own side pocket and his love of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler, among other things about him. You have a new fan, m’dear! So….I’m including the soundtrack here, as I do from time to time: What else is on your mind this morning?
