Quick Documentary Review - "God Forbid" [1]

The full title of the documentary I watched this morning is “God Forbid: The Sex Scandal That Brought Down a Dynasty.” Many of you are doubtless already familiar with the source material — it’s the story of Jerry Falwell Jr, his wife Becki and the pool boy they picked up from the Fountainbleu in Miami.

My headline is admittedly misleading — I don’t really want to review this documentary here. Defintiely don’t want to give out any spoilers, but I can enthusiastically recommend it. I’m a big fan of the director Billy Corben who appears weekly on the sports podcast I listen to — the pod is based out of Miami, so he keeps listeners up to date on your basic Florida political fuckery. You may also know some of his previous docs (“Cocaine Cowboys,” “Square Grouper,” “537 Votes”). Again, no spoilers, but Michael Cohen and tfg played a larger role in this story than I ever knew, and Corben does a tremendous job tying it all to the big picture of the rising fascism among the Christian right.

“God Forbid” debuted on Hulu today, so I apologize to those without access. I certainly wish it had the cache of a Michael Moore doc, so it could be enjoying a wide theater release a week out from the mid-terms. The release date surely isn’t accidental. I don’t necessarily believe votes will change based on a documentary, but I think it is important viewing nonetheless. If you have Hulu, check it out.
