In the aftermath of the Golden State Warriors’ second title in their extended dynastic run, they, as a team, decided not to visit the White House as NBA champions — something which had become a tradition of sorts in the league. Donald Trump, in response, tweeted that he was forgoing the invitation to the White House altogether. Of course, this wasn’t a one-time occurrence for Trump: he has sub-tweeted athletes from most major U.S. professional sports, with little rhyme or rhythm to it. But if this exchange was the extent to which the NBA felt a political struggle, then there would be no major issues in the league. But the U.S. President bickering with NBA superstars on Twitter was only the tip of the iceberg in a larger issue that trickles down to the inherent clash in having a league that is 80% black — but with executives that are overwhelmingly white.

Now we have the NBA itself cancelling all election day games in an effort to encourage people to vote. Considering the statistics about the political affiliations of NBA fans I can see how we may hear screams of outrage coming from the far-right media machine, especially proponents of the Big Lie, that this is a yet another Democratic conspiracy to steal an election.
