For the past several months, I’ve had a rather regular dinner guest on Thursday evenings. She arrives at around 5:30 and leaves at around 8, which means I often end up an absentee host here at KTK. We usually eat our meal as we stream some show on tv. Right now, we are watching The Americans, but this week we will probably watch the last episode of Better Call Saul.

My guest is going through a challenging time. Her partner of over 30 years had her served with legal papers ordering her to move from the house several months ago. He had been supporting them for the past ten years (there had been years when they were younger when she supported him) and the only income she has is her social security. She rented a room from a hoarder in San Rafael and each day is a struggle. She drives down to southern Marin every day to walk their dog, heartbroken that this is the only time she has with her treasured animal and unable to find a place to live she can afford that will allow her to share custody of their pet. She comes over to have dinner with me two or three times a week.
