The greatest basketball player in history, Bill Russell, passed at the age of 88. His beloved wife and family were at his side. No cause of death has been announced.

Fans today may not realize just how important Russell was, above and beyond the extraordinary eleven NBA championships he won with the Boston Celtics. An amazing player, absolutely, but Russell was also a consummate gentleman, a civil rights advocate, and a humanitarian of the highest order. He was a shining example of what we humans are capable of, even in the most trying of times, and the world is poorer for his passing.

May his memory be a blessing to us all.
