[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2022-07-29 That’s certainly what the most militantly devout of our Supreme Mullahs seems to be implying in remarks quoted in this Huffpo story, which I haven’t seen commented on elsewhere: “I had the honor this term of writing, I think, the only Supreme Court decision in the history of that institution that has been lambasted by a whole string of foreign leaders,” he said, pausing for laughter from the audience, “who felt perfectly fine commenting on American law.” “One of these was former [British] Prime Minister Boris Johnson, but he paid the price,” Alito said mockingly, prompting more laughs. He threw in a legal joke: “Post hoc ergo propter hoc, right?” Johnson had called the decision a “backwards step.” He recently stepped down over an unrelated string of scandals. My Latin is a little rusty, but I’ve usually seen that translated as “after such; therefore because of such.” Not only is that of course a logical fallacy; it also makes Alito’s remarks a little harder to dismiss. OK, so he’s only joking. But he is explicitly not joking that Boris Johnson paid the price with British voters over that issue, the way things happen in the kind of temporal representative democracy Alito is charged with adjudicating. He means Johnson paid the price with divine justice. Is it just me, or is Alito feeling more unbuttoned now that he’s in a supermajority? In any case, it’s scary AF that a handful of extremists who think like that — who think any criticism of their decision merits punishment from God — have been put in charge of our laws. The Huffpo story also notes that the event in Rome at which Alito delivered these remarks to a receptive audience was hosted by Notre Dame Law School. I was about to embarrass myself by wondering aloud where that came from, until I looked online and saw that NDLS is quite the bastion of Christianist “conservatism,” as applauded by some bright-eyed fanatic here. So it’s not surprising that they would host Alito, whether or not it’s appropriate. They are within their rights to advocate for the elimination of our rights as nonbelievers, but for the time being we have the right to resist them.
