I suppose we can someday look back on the 117th US Congress and wonder if we could’ve gotten something more. Maybe progressives were asking for too much if only they’d been reasonable.

Maybe universal childcare, ACA subsidy increases, and Medicare prescription drug price bargaining paired with some hand-waving tax policy and 10-year sunsets to make it reconciliatable. Maybe something that Joe Manchin could get behind, something with his name on it.

But whatever it was, however reasonable, Sinema would’ve nuked it.

Real deals will only come with a majority rule Senate, where everyone knows that regular legislation can come up and pass with 50+1 votes. Dems didn’t have the numbers this time to repair the broken rules.
