Conservative Radicals in the DoD, DHS, and DoJ seem like a massive threat to our democracy [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2022-07-15 The facts are clear at this point: Most of the powerful people in the conservative movement care more about empowering conservatism as they see it than about protecting American democracy. And it’s clear that many people who hold this view also hold positions of high power in the agencies specifically tasked with protecting American democracy. A lot of headlines are asking questions about how the DoJ seems to have chosen to prosecute Jan 6 rioters only without doing any real investigation of “legitimate” conservatives. The core problem here seems to be that DoJ elders still believe that most conservatives are good people with legitimate political arguments, so law enforcement needs to err on the side of a bad apples approach rather than risk being seen as acting politically. It seems clear that DoD and DHS have done the same even though we see evidence of Jan 6 sympathizers all over their senior ranks. It’s insane that the Sec of Defense has not ordered Charles Flynn to publicly answer every question that anybody has about his brother and hand over every record of every personal communication between them. No rational country would just unquestionably leave a coup-leader’s brother in a position of high power (command of all U.S. Army forces in the Pacific) like it was no big deal. It’s crazy that the Sec of Homeland Security hasn’t ordered every Secret Service agent to publicly answer every question. That agency should be having the house-cleaning hammer dropped on them. Instead it’s being allowed to anonymously attack a congressional witness. I’m not sure if DoJ is the worst or just the most obvious. It seems clear that there are conservative true believers all over the FBI and DoJ who can’t bring themselves to take seriously the obvious corruption at the head of the movement they’ve believed in all their lives. At some point, the leadership of those agencies has to take the threat to democracy seriously. The implication that we should just trust the brothers of coup leaders, bodyguards of a would-be autocrat, and investigators who don’t investigate coup attempts — it’s not a reasonable expectation, and it’s one that will eventually leave us all at the foot of an American Pinochet.
