I have written a few times over the years about the difficult relationship I had with him. He always had trouble accepting, not only my disability, but that we liked very different things. I was into art and theater and he was a sports fanatic. My father also did not like to travel much and rarely joined the family on trips. We did share a love of old TV, movies and music especially the great comedy teams of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. The main reason I wasn’t into sports was I was terrible at most of them. The only one I played was bowling which I did from an early age through high school. For some reason, I also enjoyed watching roller derby with my dad. As sad as it is to admit, I found it funny and exciting especially when people would over the railing. He did take me to games somewhat regularly. Of the big 4 American sports, the only one he never took me to see was football. I am not sure why, probably the price and the fact that we had to go to New Jersey to attend a game. After I graduated from college, I got more into hockey which was one of his favorite sports. He had regularly told me stories from his past going to see hockey games at Madison Square Garden both the current one and the previous one. We started bonding more through attending games and even took some trips to see hockey including a trip to Ottawa. I guess if I had been more into hockey growing up, we probably would have taken more trips as he did mention a few times wanting to take me to Pittsburgh and Montreal to see a game in the arenas there. I am sure he would have been happy to go around North America to watch hockey with me. My sister and I did go to Montreal to see the Islanders back in April. For me, it was a weird coincidence that Mike Bossy, one of the Islanders best players, died the morning of the game. It made me think more about my dad when we were in the arena. Some people might think he and Bossy were watching over the team that night as the Islanders won 3-0. While our relationship never became the type you see in those happy family movies and shows, it was better. RIP dad. Diarist reserves all rights to his original writing only. From tonight’s diarist: Ruaidhri states what I wish more in the media would regarding the so-called sane Republicans. Yes, it is good they are on the side of democracy, but they helped create the political environment we now inhabit. IMO, Tim Miller and Stuart Stevens, who both wrote mea culpa books apologizing for and explaining their actions, are two if the few who I think deserve actual praise.
