New York Times Reporters Can’t Get Data on Gas and Food Prices [1]

The New York Times had an article on the mid-term elections whose subhead told readers, “Republicans are focusing on pocketbook issues.” The piece describes how Republicans see running on inflation as their best bet. It concludes by telling readers:

“’It’s cost of living, and it’s the economy,’ said Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, the campaign arm of House Republicans. ‘This is a groceries-and-gas election.’”

It is a bit amazing that the piece never mentioned that gas prices have fallen by more than 25 percent in the last two and a half months. There is also evidence that many food items are now dropping in price, such as beef and chicken.

It seems an important point that the Republican campaign relies on a false claim about the world. (Sort of like claiming Donald Trump won the election.) It would have been worth mentioning this in the piece.
