Nearly 300 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 on Friday, 87 of them in intensive care units. That’s almost three times the number of hospitalizations in early July. Daily case totals and hospitalizations have been rising amid the state’s fourth wave of the pandemic, although they remain far below the last surge in April. State health officials say the highly contagious Delta variant accounts for more than 75% of Minnesota’s cases, which poses a threat to unvaccinated people. Vaccinated people can also become ill and spread it to others, but the number of breakthrough cases remains very small. About 64% of Minnesotans over 12 — more than 3 million people — are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and 68% have received at least one dose. Minnesota doesn’t provide regular updates on breakthrough case numbers. In late July, the state said roughly 3,880 fully vaccinated people had tested positive for COVID-19 — fewer than 0.1% of people with the completed vaccine series. More than 70 Minnesota counties are experiencing “substantial” or “high” community transmission of the virus, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control, up from 14 in late July. The CDC recommends universal indoor mask-wearing in areas with substantial or high spread.
