How cool is Rob Landley??!
==========================
Compelling Speaker
------------------
Just recently I had the luck to stumble across a talk by Rob Landley.
Not only that he's a compelling speaker. He appears to be a very nice
person. He knows whole a lot about Unix and a lot of other topics.
Just to name a few:
- unix + unix history
- linux/embedded linux
- he has an informed opinion on open source liceses
- he was maintainer of busybox
- many more...
Here's his talk that first catched me:
(HTM) Building the Simplest Possible Linux System
Minimalist (non-dogmatic)
-------------------------
A smile came to my face when I heard what he said about LinuxFromScratch:
How to create a very large, very complicated about
110 Megabytes System using conventional gnu packages.
[...] it's the base of most OS versions. It's nothing
remotely like the embedded world uses. I spent many
years making it so that a Megabyte of change in Busybox
could replace 100 Megabytes of gnu packages.
- Rob in his talk: Building the Simplest Possible Linux System, at 01:18:16
I also like the frugality in his html-Website:
(HTM) landley.net
(would love to see this as a gopherhole)
Zero Clause BSD
---------------
In this other talk he compared his toybox with busybox.
Toybox is a smaller and cleaner replacement for busybox.
(HTM) Toybox vs. Busybox
In this talk he also shared his definite opinion about licenses:
How nasty it can be that some BSD, MIT- and ISC-Licenses demand
you to carry them along.
He explained the 0BSD-License which he prefers:
(HTM) Zero Clause BSD
I think he's right about this License.
I became a fan
--------------
In case you find toybox interesting, there is an irc channel
called #toybox on libera.chat.
I'm looking forward to explore more of his talks, code, writings
and his wisdom in general.
