I just built amslatex, using a fair number of the available fonts, but
not all, and preloading only a little more than was done in
preload.ori.

The resulting fmt file is about 650K, compared to about 450K for
ordinary lplain.

I then built a preloaded version using undump. The resulting file is
over 4 megabytes! (It does work, as does "tex '&amslplain'".)

Is this expected? If so, why is it so big?

The platform is a sparc station running SUNOS 4.1. The core dump from
running virtex was 12 megabytes. The version of undump is one of the
ones on labrea.stanford.edu. (Would a different undump produce a
smaller executable?)
