Do what I used to do:

Get an AT&T 3b1.  It's a 68010 based machine.  Not fast, but it's UNIX
and will run B news.  It'll hold up to 3.5Mb of ram and talk on 3 serial
ports.  It can be easily hacked to use a large drive (check with
the .3b1 newsgroups).  You should be able to get a basic unit
for $1000 or so.

It may be slow, but it's solid, and it's UNIX.
