  Take a peek at System 7.  [It doesn't have to be an alias, but I like having
ResEdit on my desktop, without actually storing the file there]

  No.  It's automatically set up from the application's FREF resource, so it works
even for non-System 7-aware applications.
Normally, you can only drag and drop documents on top of the applications
which created them, but ResEdit has a special '****' file type, which allows you
to drag and drop absolutely any file.

  Yup.
