Uh, sorry, if the number system you are using includes infinities, those
two expressions are *not* mathematically equivalent.  I don't remember
whether X3.9 pins down the number system in sufficient detail to preclude
this, although I doubt it, since infinities have been around in some
floating-point boxes for a long time.
