Unless I'm misunderstanding the question, I think all you want to do is bring  
up the control device called "Sharing Setup".  It lets you set the name for  
your machine, and the name for the person using that machine.  There's two  
separate names now.

A suggestion iff Apple-type people are seeing this:  Have the things that  
complain about no-username-set to tell the person what they have to bring up to  
set that name.
