As I read this thread, and its descriptions of 80188-16's and 68000-series
processors driving modems, I am becoming more and more painfully aware of a 
sad fact:

If and when I buy a v.32 modem, it will be smarter than the computer that
"drives" it.  (A souped-up XT.)

Not unlike the Commodore computers that had 6502's in their disk drives, I
suspect.
