Subject: how to redefine \cite (or \@cite) to compress lists

Does anyone know what changes need to be made to the \cite
command (or \@citex or \@cite) so that using
                               \cite{ref1,ref2,ref3,ref4,ref5}
in a latex document would produce [1-5] instead of the usual [1,2,3,4,5] ?

Thanks.
