Greetings,
Well April 12th has come and gone, and here's the update to the
ux1.cso.uiuc.edu situation, as promised (albeit late).

Included in this email: Introduction (what's going on), Pledge
Instructions, and Current State of the Drive (CSoD).

******************** Introduction *********************

First, what's going on: I'm collecting *pledges* to be used to get Fish
Disk subscriptions for putting disks up on ux1.cso.uiuc.edu (128.174.5.59).
The disks will be mailed directly to my office, and they'll go up in one
heck of a hurry... I have my A500 connected to my Sun 3/50 at 9600 baud via
DNet. The Net can expect two things: fast uploading (regularly within 48
hours of receiving the disks, I'd say), and about 4-500 Meg of disk space
for the archive. Unfortunately, this means that ux1 is becoming a FIFO.

I'm not collecting money, yet- although some people have already sent me
checks and that's fine. I'll collect pledges between now and the 26th of
April, 1991. We need $300 altogether for the next subscription. It would
be nice to have $250 more to pay Lionel for the last bunch. I'm including
$50 of my own (per 100 disk subscription), so we need $500 altogether.

At this time, I'm simply waiting on a reply from the folks at uiowa
(isca.icaen.uiowa.edu) to see what their situation is. They've said that
they'll be putting up Fish disks in the future, and it won't cost anybody
anything. In that case, it wouldn't make sense to spend money on another
subscription. But I haven't yet seen disks 451-470 up over there and
I'm waiting on a reply to my email about the service we could expect from
uiowa. By the way, they do have disks 1-55, which ux1 does not.

So depending on how that looks, I'll then make my address available to
the pledgers, and people can shower me with mail :-).

********************** Pledge Instructions ********************************
Send me your *pledges*... email to schwager@mike.cs.uiuc.edu,

     Instructions for Emailing Pledges
     ---------------------------------
1. Send email to: schwager@cs.uiuc.edu
     (other pertinent network data:)
     UUCP:{uunet|convex|pur-ee}!uiucdcs!schwager
     BITNET:schwager@mike.cs.uiuc.edu

2. ***please include the word "pledge" in the subject***
case doesn't matter, and other words don't matter.

3. In the text of your message, please include:
     Your name
a return email address (preferably one that works :-)
     the amount of your pledge

4. Suggested amounts: $10 individual, $30 user group, $50 corporate
... (just pulled those figures off the top of my head, folks)
     ---------------------------------

I will email you a short reply to let you know I received your pledge
(it may take a few days).

I will automagically put you on the Fish Disks mailing list
(fishdisks@cs.uiuc.edu). This list will be used to keep you up-to-date on
pledges and whatever else may (or may not) be happening wrt to the Fish
disk situation on ux1.cso.uiuc.edu... like when new disks are put online,
for example. Of course, I will keep you off the list if you'd rather.

If you'd like to be on the fishdisks mailing list (without making a pledge),
send email to me or to

     fishdisks-request@cs.uiuc.edu

***please include the word "fish" in the subject***

(case insensitive). Remember, if you've pledged, you're on it. Anybody
who wants to could then reach the entire mailing list by emailing to

     fishdisks@cs.uiuc.edu

if you wanted to check up on my integrity or make sure I wasn't laundering
the money or anything like this...

******************* Current State of the Drive ***************************

Lots of exclamation points coming up... response to the pledges has been
good, the sun is out, the birds are singing, I got a good night's sleep, I'm
gonna dance my feet off tonight... in short, life's good!

I've collected about $831 in pledges so far! Wow, that's great! So we pay
Lionel $250, that leaves us $581! Let's say $525 just in case some folks
forget to send the bux or whatever. Now I'm going to provide $50, so that
means we will have $575 to work with. So I'll put in $50 for the next
bunch (I am, after all, getting first dibs on the disks and basically
keeping the lot here in my office), so that means we've got $625, enough
for 200 more fish disks (plus 25 bucks)! Cool! Personally, I think
getting two Fish subscriptions and giving Fred the extra dollars would
be nice... unless, of course, this posting generates many more replies.
In that case, I'd say let's get THREE subscriptions!

Actually, does anybody know how much 600 Meg hard disks are going for
these days? Maybe it would even be possible to get a subscription and
fork over some cash for a hard drive for ux1... that way, we'd have lots
more disk space for Fish disks, and they could ALL go on there. Well,
I'll check into it... no promises here...

See ya!
